Frequently Asked Questions
How did EMI UK begin?
Michael and Marietta Woods have been in Mission of one sort or another for much of their married life. In 2004 they left Mission Aviation Fellowship looking for the next step in their lives. In 2006 God called them to work with EMI and in 2007 EMI UK was born. They are now looking forward to facilitating interns and volunteers to serve God as well as to leading teams of professionals all over the world serving God and reaching the poor.

Why should I consider an Internship at EMI UK?
So often, Engineering and Architecture skills seem to do nothing but help the rich get richer. But all of us have skills that can be used to serve God and serve the poor. For those with engineering or architectural abilities, an internship with EMI UK is a great way to do just that, while at the same time gaining valuable experience and being part of a project team to a developing country.

Will I be paid?
No. Designers serve with EMI UK on a purely voluntary basis. Each intern, staff and volunteer is asked to raise support from churches, friends, and family to cover the cost of their trip. This is a great way to get even more people involved in missions. Don't worry if it sounds challenging. We will guide you through the process.

Where will I be based during my internship?
This would depend on your own preference and on EMI's need in its offices around the world. EMI has offices in seven locations around the world, of which several take interns at any one time. You might work in Calgary, Canada, or Colorado Springs in the USA. Or in the UK. Or perhaps in Costa Rica, India, the Middle East or Uganda. You should indicate your preference on the application form and we will discuss this with you.
Most interns live with families near to our offices in the area. We can connect you up with a family, or if you know of someone in the place you are working, you are welcome to stay with them.

What is working in the EMI UK office like?
Daily working hours are 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday. The office starts each day of the week with a half-hour devotion and ends each week with an hour devotion on Fridays. Interns fill just about every conceivable role in addition to working within their field of study. The primary task, though, is to produce the final report for the project worked on that term. A majority of the office work is Architecture / Engineering related, so interns spend a lot of their time working with AutoCAD and related software. Technical guidance will come from the staff and volunteers that go on your project trip. The project leader for your trip will be your primary technical guide for work in the developing world.
We arrange for the interns to spend a few hours each week taking part in a local homeless ministry serving and loving people. This is the way that EMI helps their interns to engage in Christian service during time spent in England.
The office is located in the oldest recorded Roman town of Britain, Colchester. The town has a population of about 100,000 people and is located 97km (60mi) Northeast of London. It has a much smaller-town feel to it than London, but still has many of the city convinces. It is easily accessible from London by a 1hour train ride or 2.5hour coach ride. It rains anywhere from 29-48mm(1-2in) per month and ranges from an average high temperature in July-Aug of 22C(71F) to an average low temperature in February of 1C(33F). It is home to the University of Essex and the Colchester Institute where many other local and foreign students study. The town has many lively churches that one could get involved with. Overall Colchester is a pretty low-key and quaint place to be but as a college town has great entertainment and shopping as well.
...and this only describes your time in England! For two weeks out towards the beginning of the internship, you will participate on a project trip where you will travel to site and spend time with the client ministry as well as doing the design work!
